27 medieval festivals, markets and reenactments across Europe in July 2027, in date order, with cities and what each one is known for. Expected dates say so.

July is the head of the season and behaves like one: the biggest battles and the hottest fields arrive together. On the second weekend Tewkesbury Medieval Festival fights the Wars of the Roses on a Gloucestershire river meadow, free, battle each afternoon. In mid July the Battle of Grunwald Reenactment puts well over a thousand armoured fighters on the 1410 field in Masuria; it is free, there is little shade, and the roads out are slow. Kaltenberger Ritterturnier runs three weekends of professional jousting west of Munich, all ticketed. The Mercado Medieval de Óbidos opens at five on weekdays and runs past midnight, which is the sensible response to a Portuguese July. Bring water and something to sit on.

Guédelon Castle (living medieval construction site)

Treigny, France

Guédelon is a 13th-century castle being built from scratch in a Burgundy forest quarry using only the tools, materials and techniques of the 1230s, open to visitors from spring to autumn since the first stone was laid in 1997. Around forty masons, carpenters, blacksmiths, tilers, rope-makers and carters work in front of the public, and the site draws roughly 300,000 visitors a season.

Middelaldercentret (The Medieval Centre), Nykøbing Falster

Nykøbing Falster, Denmark

Middelaldercentret is an experimental living-history museum on the Guldborgsund opposite Nykøbing Falster, where a reconstructed Danish market town of around the year 1400, Sundkøbing, is populated by costumed staff who stay in character all day. Its season runs from early May to late September with daily trebuchet firing, jousting and craft demonstrations, plus an autumn-holiday week in October and a Christmas market.

Cēsis Castle Medieval Days (formerly Cēsis Medieval Festival)

Cēsis, Latvia

Cēsis Castle, the Livonian Order's mightiest fortress and Latvia's best-preserved castle ruin, runs a costumed 'medieval season' from May to September with craft days in the castle garden, a Hanseatic market during the July city festival and period-dressed castle folk on summer weekends. A standalone annual Cēsis Medieval Festival, the successor of the Baltic Medieval Festival first held here in 2001, could not be verified as still running in 2026, so this listing is marked unverified.

Landshuter Hochzeit 1475

Landshut, Germany

Every four years about 2,500 costumed citizens of Landshut restage the 1475 wedding of Duke Georg the Rich and Princess Hedwig of Poland over three and a half weeks of processions, tournaments, camp life and plays. First performed in 1903, it is Europe's largest historical costume festival; the next edition runs 25 June–18 July 2027.

Ommegang of Brussels

Brussels, Belgium

The Ommegang is Brussels' great historical pageant: more than 1,400 participants in costume, with horses, giants, stilt-walkers, crossbowmen and flag-throwers, process from the Sablon to the Grand-Place on two evenings in early July to recreate the 1549 entry of Emperor Charles V and his son Philip. Its roots go back to a 1348 procession of the crossbowmen's guild; it was revived in 1930 and has been on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2019. The 2026 shows were on 1 and 3 July.

Kernavė, Lithuania

The Days of Live Archaeology at Kernavė are an international experimental-archaeology festival held in early July at Lithuania's UNESCO-listed medieval capital, where five hill-forts rise above the Neris valley. Craftspeople, warriors and musicians demonstrate life from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, with staged battles, archery, ancient food and hands-on workshops.

Les Médiévales de Bayeux turns the cathedral quarter of this Normandy town into a free three-day medieval festival on the first weekend of July, opening with a night parade of more than 500 performers and continuing with a market, street theatre, siege engines and concerts. Around 60,000 people attend, making it one of the largest medieval festivals in France.

Monteriggioni's 'di Torri si Corona' festival fills the tiny walled hilltop village near Siena with costumed performers, craft stalls, taverns, games and encampments over a long weekend in July. The Festa dell'Unicorno takes over the walled centre of Vinci, Leonardo's hill town, for three days each July with themed 'worlds' that range from a medieval citadel with market and knights to steampunk, cosplay, comics and horror, plus hundreds of shows and concerts and some 200 market stands. The medieval backbone is the town itself, its castle of the Conti Guidi and the knights' quarter and market; the rest is openly fantasy, and it is Italy's largest festival of the kind.

Kaltenberger Ritterturnier

Kaltenberg, Germany

The Kaltenberg Knights' Tournament is a professionally staged jousting spectacle with horse stunts and pyrotechnics in a 13,000-capacity arena at Schloss Kaltenberg, surrounded by a large medieval market and five stages. Founded in 1980 by Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, it runs over three weekends every July and draws around 120,000 visitors.

Visegrád International Palace Games

Visegrád, Hungary

The Visegrád International Palace Games are Hungary's largest medieval festival, held on the second weekend of July around the Royal Palace and Solomon Tower on the Danube Bend. Since 1985 they have recreated the court of King Charles Robert, host of the 1335 congress of kings, with jousting, royal processions, torchlit parades, falconry and a kilometre-long medieval fair.

Trakai, Lithuania

The Trakai History Museum's Medieval Festival brings re-enactors, craftsmen, musicians and 14th–15th-century warfare displays into the courtyards of the red-brick Island Castle for a summer weekend. Organised since 1998, it ran on 11–12 July 2026 with a separate €10 festival ticket.

Tournoi de Chevalerie de Carcassonne (Knights' Tournament and Falconry Show)

Carcassonne, France

Every summer the lices between the double walls of the Cité de Carcassonne host a daily knights' tournament, a 45-minute show of mounted combat in armour, billed in 2026 as 'Tournois de chevalerie et spectacle de fauconnerie' after a falconry display was added. The 2026 season runs from 12 July to 27 August with three performances a day, every day except Saturday.

Fantasy Forest Festival (Sudeley Castle)

Winchcombe, England

Fantasy Forest is the UK's fantasy festival: three days in July in the grounds of Sudeley Castle at Winchcombe with folk, pagan and fantasy bands, a fantasy market, LARP and workshops, authors and a campsite, grown from just over 1,000 visitors in 2019 to a sold-out 21,000 in 2026. The 15th-century castle where Katherine Parr lies buried is the medieval backbone; the elves, dragons and costumes are the festival.

The Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum is Germany's touring medieval-fantasy market, on the road every summer since 1994, and its Bückeburg stop in the grounds of Schloss Bückeburg is its flagship: two weekends at the turn of July and August with a large market, knights' tournaments, encampments, bands and street performers. It is medieval in its market, camp and tournament and fantasy by declaration, having taken the word into its name in 2008, and it is held beside a palace whose moated predecessor is documented in 1304.

St. Dominic's Fair is a three-week street fair in the centre of Gdańsk that traces its origins to a papal privilege of 1260, making it one of the oldest trading fairs in Europe. Rapska fjera (Rab Medieval Summer Festival)

Rab, Croatia

Rapska fjera is a three-day medieval street festival in the walled town of Rab, held every 25–27 July on the feast days of St James, St Anne and St Christopher, with craft workshops in the lanes, a fishermen's village on the beach, a costumed parade, a crossbow tournament and fireworks over the harbour. It revives a town holiday decreed in 1364 to thank King Louis I for freeing Rab from Venice, and was re-established in 2002; the 25th edition ran in July 2026.
