Medieval festivals in Sweden

Gotland’s ferry is the first queue of Medieval Week, and it forms in winter. Visby Medieval Week, the medeltidsvecka, fills the walled Hanseatic town from Sunday to Sunday in week 32, early August, with jousting on Strandgärdet below the ring wall, concerts in roofless churches and camps at Nordergravar and Galgberget. Walking the town, the market and the camps costs nothing; tournaments, concerts and courses are ticketed and many sell out before the week opens. Beds go months ahead too, so book the crossing and a room by winter or bring a tent for the festival campsite. Costume is optional, and a large share of visitors ignore the optional part.
