Medieval festivals in Austria

1 medieval festivals in Austria with dates for 2026–2027 — where they happen, when, and how to choose.

Friesach still has its water-filled moat, and every other summer it stops accepting euros. Spectaculum zu Friesach runs on the last weekend of July in even-numbered years only, so check the year before you book a bed. For the weekend you change your money at a booth into Friesacher Pfennig tokens, named after the silver penny Carinthia’s oldest town minted in the 12th century, and pay for your beer in them. Set pieces are the storming of the walls and the Saturday-night fire show. It is the Austrian Mittelalterfest we have checked properly. The station is on the Vienna–Villach line, ten minutes’ walk from the old town.

    Spectaculum zu Friesach

    Friesach, Austria

Spectaculum zu Friesach turns Austria's oldest town into a medieval stage for one weekend in late July of even-numbered years, with knights, craftspeople, minstrels, a storming of the walls and a closing fire spectacle. Visitors change their euros into Friesacher Pfennig coins, the festival's only accepted currency, before buying food and drink.
