Portugal stages its big feiras medievais back to back, one north of Lisbon and one south of Porto, and both run later into the night than a northerner expects. The Mercado Medieval de Óbidos fills the enclosure below the castle for about eleven days in the second half of July, ticketed, cheaper in costume; the gates shut when it is full, which happens on Saturday nights. The Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria follows from late July into early August, twelve days in which Santa Maria da Feira replays a chapter of Portuguese history until half past midnight; tickets are cheap, but a day ticket is single entry. Weekdays are calmer at both, and cheaper at the Viagem.

Mercado Medieval de Óbidos

Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria

Viagem Medieval is a 12-day historical recreation that turns the historic centre and castle of Santa Maria da Feira into a themed medieval town each summer, with processions, theatre, tournaments, markets and camps. Running since 1997, it is Portugal's largest medieval event.
