February’s big week was invented to fill a quiet month, which is honest of it. The JORVIK Viking Festival takes York over the school half-term: a free encampment and traders’ market on Parliament Street, talks, crafts, a best-beard contest open to children, and on the final Saturday a warriors’ march to Coppergate and a pitched battle at the Eye of York below Clifford’s Tower. The evening finale with pyrotechnics is ticketed and sells out, so book early; the longship is no longer burned. It is half-term, so the centre is full of families, and it is February in Yorkshire, so the battle is cold. Warm up in the JORVIK Viking Centre or Barley Hall between events.

    JORVIK Viking Festival

    York, England

    The JORVIK Viking Festival takes over York for a week every February half-term with a Viking encampment and traders' market in the city centre, a march of hundreds of warriors, talks, crafts, a best-beard contest and a ticketed finale battle with pyrotechnics. Founded in 1985 by the team behind the JORVIK Viking Centre, it is the largest Viking festival in Europe and draws around 40,000 people.
