Finland’s big date is the weekend after Midsummer, when the Turku Medieval Market (Turun keskiaikaiset markkinat) fills the Old Great Square beside the cathedral from Thursday to Sunday. It is free, the stallholders are vetted so the honey and the blacksmith’s work are the real thing, and a market play runs in episodes through the day, so you can leave for a coffee and come back for the next act. Turku is Finland’s oldest town, though a fire in 1827 took most of the wooden one, so the square, the cathedral and the castle downstream are what is left. Two hours by train from Helsinki. Pack layers: Finnish Midsummer weather does hot and wet in the same afternoon.

Turku Medieval Market

Turku, Finland

The Medieval Market of Turku fills the Old Great Square and surrounding streets with four days of free market stalls, craft demonstrations, music and a daily street play every year at the end of June. Held since 1996, it is Finland's largest medieval event, with attendance reported at well over 100,000.
