Denmark’s headline middelalderfestival is held behind bars. Horsens Medieval Festival takes over FÆNGSLET, the former state prison, on the last Friday and Saturday of August, dresses the yards as a walled town and lets you in for nothing; the Friday evening, once the fires are lit, is the one to see. Parking runs out early, so walk from the station. The rest of the season belongs to Middelaldercentret outside Nykøbing Falster, a rebuilt town of around 1400 whose staff stay in character all day and fire a trebuchet daily. It opens from early May to late September, plus an autumn week and a Christmas weekend, and is about two hours from Copenhagen, so use the seven-day ticket.

    Middelaldercentret (The Medieval Centre), Nykøbing Falster

    Middelaldercentret is an experimental living-history museum on the Guldborgsund opposite Nykøbing Falster, where a reconstructed Danish market town of around the year 1400, Sundkøbing, is populated by costumed staff who stay in character all day. Its season runs from early May to late September with daily trebuchet firing, jousting and craft demonstrations, plus an autumn-holiday week in October and a Christmas market.

    Middelaldercentret Christmas Market

    Nykøbing Falster, Denmark

    Alletiders Julemarked opens the Middelaldercentret's reconstructed town of around 1400 for one weekend each year, the Saturday and Sunday of the first Advent weekend, with stalls of local crafts and food set among the museum's medieval houses; the 2026 market is on 28–29 November, 10:00–16:00. Admission was DKK 59 for adults and DKK 29 for children in 2025.

    Horsens Middelalderfestival turns FÆNGSLET, the town's former state prison, into a medieval town for two days at the end of August, with knights, craftsmen, musicians, a market and hundreds of costumed participants. Run by the municipality since 1995 and free to enter, it calls itself northern Europe's largest medieval festival and draws around 100,000 visitors.
