What happens at Middelaldercentret (The Medieval Centre), Nykøbing Falster?

The centre grew out of a working reconstruction of a medieval trebuchet built in 1989 for the 700th anniversary of Nykøbing Falster; the institution itself was founded in 1992 and is now a state-recognised museum that tests medieval technology by building and using it. Its site at Sundby, on the Lolland shore of the Guldborgsund about 4 km from Nykøbing Falster station, holds the fictional market town of Sundkøbing: timber-framed houses, workshops, a market square and a harbour with reconstructed ships of the period.

Staff and volunteers live the year 1400 or thereabouts during opening hours and do not step out of character, so visitors are addressed as travellers arriving in a Danish town of Queen Margrethe’s time. The daily programme includes firing the trebuchets and cannon, a jousting tournament with mounted knights, weapons training with longbows and crossbows, cooking over open fires, and demonstrations of crafts such as smithing, weaving, pottery and shipbuilding. Children can try armour, games and archery, and there are themed weeks during the Danish school holidays.

The 2026 season runs from 6 May to 20 September, daily 10:00–16:00 except Mondays in May and September and on 1, 8, 15 and 22 June; on Midsummer Eve, 23 June, the site stays open until 20:30. It reopens for the autumn holiday week from 12 to 16 October (Wednesday 14 October until 20:30) and holds a Christmas market on 28–29 November. Tickets are valid for a whole week, so a visit can be spread over several days. Low-season prices (6 May–26 June and 31 August–20 September) are 179 kr for adults, 89 kr for children aged 4–11 and 499 kr for a family of two adults and three children; in high season (27 June–30 August and the autumn week) they are 209, 119 and 599 kr.

Nykøbing Falster is about an hour and a half to two hours from Copenhagen by train. From the station the centre is reached by local bus, taxi or bicycle across the Guldborgsund bridge; there is free parking, a restaurant and picnic space on site, and dogs on a lead are welcome. The centre counted around 45,000 visitors in 2016.
