Hungary’s headline event sits where three kings met in 1335, and the Visegrád International Palace Games have restaged that court on the second weekend of July since the mid-1980s. The jousting is on a field by the Danube below the citadel, the fair runs for the best part of a kilometre along the main street, and torchlit parades take the town after dark. It is ticketed, with tournament seats sold separately from the day pass. Visegrád itself has few beds, so many come up from Budapest for the day, an hour and a quarter by bus, or stay in Szentendre. The summer boat from Budapest is slower, and the Danube Bend is the reason to take it.

Visegrád International Palace Games

Visegrád, Hungary

The Visegrád International Palace Games are Hungary's largest medieval festival, held on the second weekend of July around the Royal Palace and Solomon Tower on the Danube Bend. Since 1985 they have recreated the court of King Charles Robert, host of the 1335 congress of kings, with jousting, royal processions, torchlit parades, falconry and a kilometre-long medieval fair.
