The MPS is not one festival but a tour: founder Gisbert Hiller has taken the same market, tournament arena, encampments and stages from town to town since the first Mittelalterlich Spectaculum in 1994, and the 2008 renaming to Mittelalterlich Phantasie Spectaculum made clear that the aim is a fantastical world inspired by the Middle Ages rather than a historical reconstruction. Bückeburg is its biggest stop and the only one held on two consecutive weekends: in 2026 on 25–26 July and 1–2 August, in 2027 on 24–25 July and 31 July – 1 August, on the palace grounds by the Schlossplatz.
A day at the MPS means a market of costumed traders and craftspeople, mounted and foot tournaments in the arena, falconry, jugglers, bards and fire shows, Heerlager encampments where re-enactment groups camp for the weekend, a children’s programme and several music stages; the event runs its own currency, the Goldtaler, in notes worth €5 to €50. Saturday runs from 11:00 to midnight and Sunday from 11:00 to 19:00. Bringing alcohol onto the grounds is prohibited.
2026 was a turning point. Hiller announced that the separate Musik-Arena with headline bands such as Saltatio Mortis, Subway to Sally, Versengold and Feuerschwanz, the giant stage, pyrotechnics and Ferris wheel would appear for the last time that summer, because the cost of the arena productions had become unaffordable; from 2027 the MPS concentrates on the market, tournaments, camps, street performers, bagpipe bands and smaller up-and-coming acts, and promises a cheaper, more family-oriented event. Expect the 2027 programme to look different from videos of earlier years.
Schloss Bückeburg is the real thing: a moated castle of 1304 turned Weser Renaissance palace in 1560–1564, still the home of the princes of Schaumburg-Lippe, with a park of more than 80 hectares and a court riding school. 2027 advance prices are a two-day pass at €40 for ages 15 and over and €20 for ages 7–14, or €29 for Saturday and €22 for Sunday, with children under 7 free; camping is available from Thursday morning to Monday morning from €55 for a small tent. Bückeburg station is on the Hanover–Minden line.
