The Middelaldercentret at Sundby, across the Guldborgsund from Nykøbing Falster, closes its living-history season in September and reopens for a single winter weekend: the Christmas market on the weekend of the first Sunday of Advent. In 2026 that is Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November, 10:00–16:00, as published on the museum’s own prices page; in 2025 it ran 29–30 November (Saturday 10:00–16:00, Sunday 10:00–15:00) with admission of DKK 59 for adults and DKK 29 for children.
It is a Danish Christmas market in a medieval setting rather than a medieval re-enactment. The timber-framed houses of the reconstructed town are decorated with fir, lights and woven paper hearts, and the stalls sell decorations, crafts, jewellery, glass, ceramics, spiced spirits and wine from local makers and artists. On the square there is gløgg, æbleskiver, rice pudding and sausages, with Christmas dishes served in Ridder Svanes Madhytte, and the inn Den Gyldne Svane is open. Craft demonstrations such as weaving and blacksmithing are the closest link to the museum’s usual programme; Father Christmas visits with a pair of ponies for short rides at a token fee, and there are Christmas competitions, a heart hunt and music from the local music school for children.
The market has been planned since 2011 by the Guldborgsund Gildet, the museum’s volunteer guild, and is held every year on the first Advent weekend, so 27–28 November 2027 is expected. The museum’s main season — the reconstructed town with its costumed inhabitants, trebuchet and ships — runs from May to September and has its own page.
The centre is about 3 km from Nykøbing Falster station, across the Guldborgsund bridge at Sundby; Nykøbing is about two hours from Copenhagen by train.
