Burg Ronneburg stands on a basalt spur above the village of Altwiedermus, about 35 km east of Frankfurt, and is one of the few German hilltop castles to have kept its medieval form. Its Historischer Weihnachtsmarkt is held on the first three Advent weekends: in 2026 on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November, 5 and 6 December and 12 and 13 December, Saturdays 11:00–20:00 and Sundays 11:00–18:00, as published by the castle. Admission is €10 for adults, €8 reduced, €7 for children and €7 for visitors dressed head to toe in historical costume; family tickets cost €24–36 depending on the number of children, and parking is €3 (2026 prices as published).
Inside, the castle’s historic rooms — otherwise closed for the winter, since the season ends in November — are lined with small stalls selling crafts, gifts and Christmas goods. Outside the walls a medieval market grows up with merchants, taverns, craftspeople, jesters and musicians, and the smell of mulled wine and fresh waffles. The family highlight is the Lebendiges Krippenspiel, a living nativity play staged in the castle. The organiser is the Freunde der Ronneburg e.V., the association that runs the castle year-round with its medieval markets and falconry displays.
The castle itself was a residence of the Counts of Ysenburg-Ronneburg and, in the 18th century, a refuge for religious dissenters, among them Count Zinzendorf’s Moravian community in the 1730s; visitors can see the medieval kitchen, the armoury and one of the deepest castle wells in Germany.
Most visitors come by car (about 45 minutes from Frankfurt; the car park charges €3), since public transport to the village is thin — the nearest stations are Büdingen and Langenselbold, with infrequent buses. The site is a hill with steep paths and no shelter from the wind, so dress for it; Saturday afternoons are the busiest, and the costume discount is real. The market always falls on the first three Advent weekends, so 27–28 November, 4–5 and 11–12 December 2027 is expected.
