The market stands on Wittelsbacherplatz (Brienner Strasse 6–10), the square around Thorvaldsen’s equestrian statue of Elector Maximilian I, a three-minute walk from Odeonsplatz U-Bahn. The 2026 edition runs from Friday 20 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–21:00, with the ceremonial opening at 18:00 on 20 November; it is closed on Sunday 22 November for Totensonntag. The 2025 market ran 24 November – 23 December. Entry is free.
The stalls are built as faithful replicas of historical Munich market stands, and the traders, cooks and performers work in period dress. The cultural programme runs on every Advent weekend: medieval music on the stage, historical show fights with swords and dance performances. The food is themed too — mulled wine is sold here as Hexentrunk, ‘witches’ brew’ — alongside the usual medieval-market staples of roast meat, flatbread and mead. The organiser is Medieval Monacum OHG (Monacum being the Latin name of Munich), which has run the market on this square since 2005.
The square itself is not medieval: it was laid out by Leo von Klenze in the 1820s and belongs to the classical quarter around Odeonsplatz. Munich’s medieval core — Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Alter Hof and St Peter’s — is a ten-minute walk south, and the city’s main Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz runs in the same weeks.
The market always closes on 23 December, but its opening day varies with the calendar: a Monday in 2025, a Friday in 2026. Weekday lunchtimes are the quietest; Friday and Saturday evenings the most crowded.
