Esslingen runs two markets in one: a conventional Christmas market on the Marktplatz and, around the Rathausplatz and Hafenmarkt, a medieval market where traders and performers work in period dress. The medieval part started in 1998 with nine stalls and now makes up a large share of the roughly 200 stands. The 2026 market runs from 24 November to 22 December, opening daily 11:00–20:30 and until 21:30 on Fridays and Saturdays; the opening ceremony is on 24 November at 17:00.
The draw is the programme rather than the shopping. Around 500 scheduled slots across three stages bring fire-eaters, stilt-walkers, minstrels, storytellers and acrobats, and some twenty craftspeople demonstrate trades such as blacksmithing, tin-casting, felt-making, basket weaving and glass-blowing. Fixtures include a heated wooden bathing tub on the Hafenmarkt, archery, a candle workshop, a hand-cranked miniature Ferris wheel, a storytelling tent for children and adults, a living nativity at the Postmichelbrunnen, a medieval concert in one of the old town churches and a torchlit procession up to Esslingen’s castle walls.
Entry is free; you pay for food, mulled wine, mead and activities. The organiser, Esslinger Stadtmarketing & Tourismus, counts around a million visitors over the four weeks, and the market regularly features in lists of the most attractive Christmas markets in the German-speaking world.
Esslingen is about 15 minutes from Stuttgart main station on the S1 suburban train, and the market is a five-minute walk from Esslingen station. Weekend evenings are very crowded; weekday afternoons are the calmest time to see the craft demonstrations.
