The market is held in the Stallhof, the tournament yard built in 1586–91 beside the Residenzschloss and one of the few Renaissance jousting grounds in the world to survive in its original form; the Fürstenzug mural runs along the outside of its long gallery and the Frauenkirche is a two-minute walk away. The 2026 Mittelalter-Weihnacht runs from Wednesday 25 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–21:30. It then reopens for the Dresdner Rauhnächte from 27 to 30 December 2026 (11:00–21:30) and from 2 to 6 January 2027 (11:00–20:00, on 6 January to 18:00).
More than fifty traders and craftspeople work in the clothing of the late Middle Ages and with its tools and materials: the organiser’s rule is no piped Christmas music, hardly any electric light and no plastic. There is live music and street theatre on the yard every day. Two fixtures set it apart from a normal Christmas market: the bathhouse, a hot wooden tub for up to six guests booked as a private session, and the Kurfürstliche Tafel, a seated area with heated cushions where you eat and drink in the yard. Archery contests run on the yard, and during the Rauhnächte, the twelve nights between Christmas and Epiphany that carry an old folk belief in wandering spirits, the programme adds fortune tellers and costumed ‘magical creatures’.
Entry is free on weekdays. On the Advent weekends, from Friday afternoon to Sunday, and during the Rauhnächte from 27 to 30 December, the organiser charges admission: €5 for adults and €3 for children, with pre-school children free (2026/27 prices as published). The organiser is bibow communications GmbH, a Dresden events company.
The Stallhof is in the middle of the Altstadt between the castle and the Frauenkirche, a few minutes on foot from the Altmarkt and Theaterplatz tram stops and about 15 minutes from the main station on foot or by tram. The Striezelmarkt on the Altmarkt, first documented in 1434 and the oldest recorded Christmas market in Germany, runs in the same weeks a few metres away, so the two are easily combined in one evening.
