The Midwinter Fair is Archeon’s winter opening: for one weekend in December the whole museum park is given over to fantasy, history, folklore and old winter traditions. The 22nd edition runs on Saturday 12 December 2026 from 10:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 13 December from 10:00 to 18:30, so that the fires, lanterns and evening concerts on the Saturday play out in the dark. The 21st edition, themed ‘Lunar Legends’, was held on 6–7 December 2025.
Bands play in three covered venues spread through the park, the medieval cloister, the Roman inn and the heated Roman bathhouse, with more music, walking acts, workshops and storytelling outside. A market of craftspeople and traders lines the streets of the medieval town (on the Saturday the market closes at 19:30), the park’s restaurants serve historical dishes, and the weekend builds to the Midwinter Ritual around the fires. Many visitors come in cloaks, horns and elf ears, but costume is optional; prop weapons must be of plastic, foam or wood, and metal blades, real crossbows and firearms are banned.
Archeon opened in 1994 and reconstructs prehistoric, Roman and medieval buildings at full size on the basis of excavations, with costumed interpreters working the crafts in season; its medieval quarter is set around 1350 and includes a Franciscan friary copied from a Dordrecht original. That makes the fair one of the few fantasy events in Europe staged inside a living-history setting rather than a castle park or exhibition hall.
Tickets are sold per day or as a two-day passe-partout, with a children’s rate for ages 4–12 and a reduction for Museumkaart holders; regular Archeon tickets and the Museumkaart on its own are not valid on fair days. The park is about 20 minutes on foot or a short bus ride from Alphen aan den Rijn station, which has direct trains from Leiden and Utrecht. A sister event, the Midzomer Fair, is held in the park in June.
