Medieval Vorden

Vorden is a village of the Achterhoek, the rural eastern corner of Gelderland near the German border, and belongs to the municipality of Bronckhorst. It is known in the Netherlands as the village of eight castles: Kasteel Vorden, Hackfort, Den Bramel, Onstein, De Kieftskamp, Het Medler, De Wildenborch and De Wiersse stand within a few kilometres of each other, and a signposted cycle route links them.

Kasteel Vorden, on the southern edge of the village, is first mentioned in 1315 as a fortified house. It was plundered in 1580 during the Eighty Years’ War and rebuilt around 1610, which gives it its present form of a compact moated house with corner towers. The Van der Borch family owned it from 1771 to 1974; it then passed to the Geldersch Landschap trust, was restored in 1976 and served as Vorden’s town hall until 2004, when it was sold to private owners who run it as a venue and hotel. The castle stands in a wooded estate with open meadows at De Horsterkamp, about a five- to fifteen-minute walk from Vorden station on the Zutphen–Winterswijk line.

Elfia, the Netherlands’ largest fantasy and cosplay festival, moved its spring edition here in May 2026 after 23 years at Kasteel de Haar near Utrecht. Beyond festival weekends, Vorden is a base for cycling and walking between the castles and the woods of the Achterhoek; Zutphen, a Hanseatic town with a medieval centre, is 10 km away.
